Every little bit helps when it comes to saving money to get back to school!!

Single Parent Advocate just partnered with Operation Back to School, and World Vision in the Dallas area to send 350 children of single parents back to school with back packs. This was no small task, so we found many other organizations committed to helping students succeed in education by giving supplies to qualified families.

Thanks to Life Message, Grace Outreach Church in Plano, Texas, First Baptist Downtown Dallas, Operation Back to School, World Vision, SheBang Gun Club and Tamara Shelley, Siemens, Solomon Associates, Courtney Ridings and Fred Mackie, Chick Fil A Park and Plano, participating Starbucks locations, Gifts for Moms, This Side Up Family Fun Center, and all the individuals that helped gather, pack, and deliver school supplies this year with Single Parent Advocate! Also, thanks to Telemundo for helping to tell our story!

Now, for another perspective on Back to school, our own Kathleen Ericksen discusses savings and scholarships for Single Parent Families seeking education for their children:

Back to School Savings

Some states, for example – Michigan, require school districts to provide all necessary school supplies to children receiving a free public education. Other states, for example- Wisconsin, require school districts to provide books and school supplies for children whose parents cannot otherwise afford them. Organizations such as – Boys and Girls Clubs of America, United Way and The Salvation Army have distributed millions of dollars worth of free school supplies to children. Call the organizations close to you to see if they are holding a free school supply event. Churches in your area usually work together to help kids get free school supplies. Call any church and tell them your needs.

Many churches organize school supply drives during back-to-school time so they can have supplies on hand for children who need them. If the church isn’t participating, the church secretary should be able to put you in touch with a church that can help.

As a single parent, paying for school can be difficult. But single parent scholarships exist to ease the burden many single parents face when trying to balance work, school and paying the bills. Single parent scholarships are distributed by individuals and groups or societies for use at a specific school. Single parents can find scholarships like the Clarkson Family Scholarship at University of North Carolina or the Jessie Hibbs Scholarship at Virginia Commonwealth.
